As a fully remote worker at Acquia, I always jump at the chance to meet up with fellow Acquians, especially when we get to spend the day working together to create something to benefit others.
Give Back More is one of Acquia’s core values - what we call our Core DNA. Every year, we get volunteering days to support good causes, and being Reading-based for the UK head office, a long standing relationship has been forged with Camp Mohawk, which provides:
A ‘safe haven’ with both indoor and outdoor facilities where children and young people with special needs and their families can come to relax, play, develop social skills and build their self-confidence in a positive and uplifting environment that accepts and welcomes them all.
We had two days organised by Acquia, where team members would spend the day working on whatever the team at Camp Mohawk needed doing.
On the day we rocked up, this involved stripping back some old safety matting around their accessible roundabout, digging out the surrounds and preparing it for gravel and some permanent matting to be laid.
Sounds like an easy job, right … trust me, we were absolutely exhausted by the end of the day!
It was a really great way to get to know other Acquians, some of whom I know in passing from Slack and others who I would never have otherwise encountered. Bonding over pickaxes and wheelbarrows full of heavy, clay-filled soil was certainly an experience we won’t forget in a hurry, and it was a delight to see the families enjoying using the roundabout a few weeks after we finished!
